Re: afk gump
Theres a link right at the top of the page for penalties, where it breaks down the types of checks, and what happens if you fail each. While not on the main page, i certainly wouldn't call it "hidden". However, I will ask that it be made more prominent.

Re: afk gump
If intended to be the authoritative rule (rather than merely informational) it's miscategorized in a section that someone intending to obey the rules would never have cause to read. If it's informational then everything listed should fall within a category that an authoritative rule bans.+Requiem wrote:i certainly wouldn't call it "hidden".
In to which banned category does using a spinning wheel or loom fall? Gathering resources? No.
Gathering resources is a broadly used term within the wider UO community which means exactly the following:
Using a mining tool to collect ore
Using a lumberjacking tool to collect wood
Shearing a sheep for wool
Harvesting plants such as cotton, flax or wheat
Fishing
Picking up items off the ground outside the players' houses
Picking up server-spawned items from within unowned containers outside the players' houses (i.e. macro-collecting rares)
It would be inappropriate and confusing to to redefine "gathering resources" in a way specific to Excelsior. Doubly so if you don't actually spend the words redefining it. You need a rule that either explicitly lists the two activities (using a spinning wheel, using a loom) or covers them in a broader category where they fit (e.g. crafting).
So yeah, it's a hidden rule. Don't defend it, just fix it so that it needs no defense.

Wil
Re: afk gump
irony: afk checks have ran on spinning wheels for over 2 years, you have played on this shard for quite a long time, and for some reason inside the last week this became a problem?
I have to ask.. and at this point am quite curious, how much spinning are you doing where you feel the need to get up and go do something else? what would be the purpose of all that bulk cloth I do wonder.. getting a weeks worth of bandages takes minutes, and its doubtful you don't already have tailoring trained

We are all well acquainted with your personal feelings of what is "inappropriate" around here, Wil. You seem incapable of having a constructive conversation on the forums without being condescending, uppity or otherwise unpleasant.
+R has already said how he feels about the matter and that it's been brought to +C's attention. I don't see why you feel the need to continue harping at the issue. All the salient points have already been addressed, and now it is a matter for colibri to handle when he gets around to it.
In the future, I think it would be best for you to be more aware of how your posts are being perceived by the rest of us, the overall tone you are conveying, and to remember that your place here isn't shard police or supreme rule-definer. You play here, we are the staff, therefore telling us what is/isn't "appropriate" or "right" as if your personal opinion is an absolute fact is not okay. It comes across very arrogant, condescending, and disrespectful and therefore much - if not all - of any validity in your posts is lessened. It is the job of those of us on staff to decide what is or isn't appropriate and right for the shard, and I think you would find that you have much better interactions with us if you took that into account when entering into these kinds of discussions.

Hi Yoda,Yoda wrote:at this point am quite curious, how much spinning are you doing where you feel the need to get up and go do something else?
I finally ran low on bolts of cloth that I use for tailoring and cut up for bandages that I use on my characters and pets. IIRC, I had something north of 8,000 wool (flax) on my keys by then, collected mostly when I ran through my daily beekeeping scripts. It takes quite a while to spin 8,000 wool to 24,000 yarn and then weave 24,000 yarn to cloth.
As for why I care so much, I told you in my second post on this thread: having been burned by hidden rules here in the past, I don't want it to happen again.

Wil

good god man, to each their own but what possible use could you have for upwards of 400k of cut cloth

Re: afk gump
Wil, the only rules you have been "burned" by here were posted directly on the codex (including the one regarding weaving). In one specific case, the rules were posted on ALL of the following: the wiki, the forum announcements, town criers and announced in world chat repeatedly over the course of a week. None of that qualifies as "hidden" in any way. So, it's beyond time to Let It Go on that front.

With due respect Nyx, you and I are both a part of a larger society which holds a strong consensus that making and enforcing hidden rules is wrong. That consensus is strong enough that I'm very comfortable expressing its view as a simple fact. It is your privilege to take offense and find that statement condescending. Don't ask me to be sorry for speaking truth.+Nyx wrote:We are all well acquainted with your personal feelings of what is "inappropriate" around here, Wil. And if I can be abrasive at times, I find myself in good company. Uppity? Really? How high do you tower that you would -ever- describe another human being as uppity?
I look forward to seeing the correction.+Nyx wrote:it is a matter for colibri to handle when he gets around to it.

The same thing I did with the last batch: use it for a long, long time without having to deal with it again. I haven't kept count, but I'm sure I've gone through a couple hundred thousand bandages in the time I've played here.Yoda wrote:good god man, to each their own but what possible use could you have for upwards of 400k of cut cloth

I don't think it was the statement itself anyone found condescending. It's more the way you wrote it, with this air of superiority. Like you own the shard, and don't respect the staff, or their decisions. Like we OWE you something for allowing you to play here.
A word of wisdom, you're not entitled to anything here, so don't for one second think you are. I think you need to take a step back and realize you are talking to essentially your superiors. While I don't think I am better than you as a person, I'm really a manager, (as is the other Staff), or assistant manager, and you're just an employee. We make the rules, not you. If you don't like them, you can try to discuss them in an appropriate manner. We may take some time to listen, but that doesn't mean anything will change.
Show us the respect we earned by having a + in front of our names, or don't, but expect to be treated back accordingly.
We *allow* you to play here, for free. Remember that. It's our shard, and our rules.

Re: afk gump
Yes it is. As I've said and implied in this thread. Repeatedly. And have done everything within my power to drag the topic back to effectively communicating the rules every time someone has strayed in to talking about what should or shouldn't be a rule.+Requiem wrote:It's our shard, and our rules.
I'd like to say it's the world. All seven billion people. It's probably safer to say Europe and North America. Folks in those regions hold as a ground truth that hidden law violates basic tenets of fairness.+Requiem wrote:Who is this society that holds this consensus you're talking about?
I consider myself entitled to fair dealings, here and everywhere. Surely you consider yourself entitled to the same?+Requiem wrote:you're not entitled to anything here, so don't for one second think you are.

I agreed with you that some rules would be better off clarified a bit better.
ZERO.
