Excelsior Museum!

Post by Phil the Fisher »

With all the interesting and unique items that suddenly fell into our laps the other night (pun intended), I was wondering what people would think about starting an Excelsior Museum? There could be a wing for pets unique to Excelsior, a wing for event-related items (prizes, unique sashes, etc.), a wing for custom crafts and crafting materials, a hall of GMs, a food court (with all the many unique foods I've seen floating around here) and many more wings for things I'm not thinking of atm.

I thought that as a mechanism for receiving museum pieces, players could submit special pouches which would contain an item and, if the player knew the history of the item, a book describing it. A GM would then duplicate the item and book, return the original to the player, then deposit the copies in a museum bin for later sorting (either by GMs or volunteers). Since this would be a rather large undertaking, and would require a lot of space (I'm thinking several house plots), some help from the GMs would be necessary to get this project started. I'm happy to help work on this, but don't want to be solely responsible for the museum as classes resume for me next week and simply won't have the time.

Cool idea, except I think all submissions should be the real item and not replicas. I wouldn't go to a museum in RL if i knew all the items were copies, and i wouldn't go to one in UO just to see copies either.

If you get the Museum up and running, I'll check it out. Good luck finding a curator.

Melkor, the reason I'd ask for duplicates is to increase the amount of items available for display. Let's say that I'm Mr. Beenontheshardforever and have this amazing, one-of-a-kind piece of deco that I got back when the shard first started. I don't imagine that Mr. B is going to hand over the item to be put on display (at least not permanently, and it would be too much of a hassle to work out a museum loan system). Therefor, in order to "obtain" that super rare item, I'd ask to make a copy of it. Granted, now it's a two-of-a-kind piece, but it's technically no different from taking a screenshot of it and displaying the item on a web page, since all the items in the museum will remain permanently out of circulation.

You would a museum just for all the funny foods that +Rayne used to make us I can think of one day where I got at least 5 or 6 named items from her I have a 125 count chest full of stuff like that. That soon asI get some stone tables made Im going to put out on display in my house. everything from a Pi awareness day pie, to Seargant Bash's syrup and a chocolate oscar for best shard and Arlon's Apple Pie. I used to leave myself logged on just in the hopes that I wouldnt miss some of her fun goodies she used to make.

Lol Hanarg, it sounds like you're right - I would need a whole museum dedicated just to the unique foods! (I loved the Pi pie) So maybe instead of a single museum, we could copy the Smithsonian and create a museum mall :)

Dont forget the many storage and catacombs that exist beneath the smithsonian as well! We could get em to put monster spawns down there. So while your searching the off limits area under the smithsonian for hidden artifacts look out for the creepy guardians!

I smell quests a'brewin... Great thinking, Brotherwolf! I'm thinking maybe the dungeon Doom in the alt Malas. Spruce it up a bit, dust out the cobwebs, scatter about a bunch of display cases and presto! Instant museum! Maybe the museum quests could include inscription or item identification as requirements. Or maybe evaluate intelligence (as part of the Doorguard Quest to keep idiot children out of the snobby wing of the museum).
