Time for a little update. I'll keep it short since this isn't a kitty blog lol
He hid in the cupboard for about 40 hours. I suspected he wasn't eating. Everything you read tells you to leave him, but the lack of food concerned me. I opened the cupboard and he seemed receptive to being petted. I spent Saturday laying on the floor, petting him in the cupboard, he really liked the attention. I was able to get him out about 1 foot, just enough to get him to the food. He was very hungry and did eat.
Sunday, with me by his side he ventured out of the bathroom a little.
From Monday to current (Thursday morning) He likes to explore and re-explore the house, however he wants me to be right by his side, otherwise he meows like crazy. At this point he is very high maintenance. Even doing the dishes or getting ready in the morning he is meowing. I'm told this is not his regular behavior. As we explore, we go from spot to spot, he likes to be petted in each spot, he marks his scent by rubbing his cheeks on things. I think when I'm gone he mostly hides somewhere. He came from a home with 2 other cats so I'm sure he is missing them too. As long as I'm right beside him, following him, he is quiet.
At first I thought he was meowing looking for his cat friends, and I think that's still part of it. But more I think he is just too scared to really get used to the place on his own. He wouldn't eat or leave the cupboard without me, he won't explore without me. I'll give him what he needs, but I need him to eventually get used to things and quiet down. I suspect he will. If we can get through this I'm sure our bond will be very strong, I'm all the poor guy has. He is a very nice cat. He is eating and using his litter box.
As for names, nothing has really hit me. I have my 5 year old twin boys coming this weekend. Which I think will be great for the cat because there will be more people to spend time with him. He reacted well when my girlfriend was over earlier this week. So I think he'll be fine with them. Perhaps my kids will think of a name that fits.
I’ve had him one week now.
