Yeah that seems like the proper procedure. I have a machine here that had some suspicious issues, and well I had it checked at the computer shop, and got a clean bill of health, probably was just a corrupted filesystem (the shop is one of the best ones around here, they specialize in servers and workstations). But still, I'm hesitant to use it for real... need to take some time and do some writes & reads and make sure it's all working well, 100% cpu workload for a day, so i can know..
Well if a machine is still showing odd behavior, do you scrap the whole thing, or take it apart and test each component separately? If the components show that it's all ok, do you play it safe and scrap it all?

When it's me personally, I poke and prod and try to figure out what's wrong. Scavenge it for parts if I can't figure it out. When it's me professionally, if I can't quickly track down a concrete problem the machine isn't worth enough money compared to the cost of my time and the risk-cost of a service outage.
Facebook took it a step further: a server declared a lemon is abandoned in place and removed when the entire rack is retired. It gets -zero- further effort from the staff.

Yeah the time involved with figuring things out is a huge factor. Back when computers were more expensive, or even like in a personal setting trying to troubleshoot a 5-10 year old machine is worth it, but with the service outage and manhours that can be lost, it's better to write off that piece of hardware, well depends on how expensive it is.
Oh, well this is also a possible explanation for the disconnects:

It has now been about 12 hours and it seems that the connection is stable.
It's back. Same symptoms: heavy network packet loss from all sources.

Looks like the lag spikes are back, so I plan to move us to a different server tomorrow.

Connection will be very rocky today. There will be several restarts, but I'll let you know before each one (about a 10-minute announcement before it goes offline). The lag spikes make it very hard to play anyway, so I'm just trying to figure out what the best options are. I'm also setting up a fresh server for us to move to. I was planning on a larger server/network/system re-make in february 2025 but I will do it these days, since it became a priority.

alright, so let's update this a bit... it still says failed for yesterday but didn't reset my reward, so I'm ok w/it. Voting is back on the site. Thanks, +C for all the hard work you're doing keeping us up & running! =)
