Fishing gains

It has been 5 years since I reached 120 fishing on my main guy and I recently made another toon. I'm at 23 skill and fishing off a boat. Started at shore and gradually move out to deeper water as the tiles become depleted. I have not had a gain in over 2 hours. Wonder what I need to do differently.

38 views and noone has any idea why I cannot get any fishing gain at all?

ive had a rough time raising mine as well. make sure you are fishing in deep water. i was also using a +5 bonus fishing pole, not sure if its made a difference or not as far as speed. i will tell you i'm at 116.5 and its slowwwwwwwwwwww. haha. GL

I 120'd fishing a few months ago after the changes using a razor macro and had no problems.
Here's the macro...you'll need to navigate to your razor macros folder and save it there.
Finding the macros folder can be a bit tricky but just a do a quick web search and you should
be able to get to it. Anyway you can simply create a new text file and use the following text
and name it whateveryouwant.macro . It should then show up in razor next time you fire it up.

Keep in mind fishing is considered gathering and you'll get an AFK check every so often so keep an eye on things.

Thanks for the replies. I have been using that macro for years now and I fish in shallow and deep water. From shore and from boat. Bought skill to 28.x and have fished for 3 hours now. Still 28. Think I am bugged.

I also tried to do something on my boat and it said "you cannot do that while the boat is moving". Thing is, It wasn't moving.

Are you sure that you didn't lock your skill?

"you cannot do that while the boat is moving" - I think that's a bug with the hatch. If the boat stops by itself (either by hitting something or after "one forward/..." command) you can't open the hatch, you need to say "stop" first.

Also I thought you needed 80 skill to fish in deep water, so maybe cannot get gains there until you are over this threshold?

Skill not locked and tried fishing off dock since skill is low. Still looking for my first gain

I have found on and off in the last 3 weeks I have raised my fishing from a boat from somewhere in the high 60's to 110 from a boat in deep water somewhere off Moonglow using this steam macro.

Ive got a good razor macro that moves me when the fish stop biting.

I just gave up on fishing on this particular toon. Tried a few more hours and still no gains anywhere.

you wont gain any fishing trying to fish deep water at 23 fishing. fish at brit docks till 50 , then move to magincia. the docks at magincia are considered deep water because they sit so far out from the land. or at least that is how they were treated in Subscription UO.


I'm fishing at the brit docks right now and am gaining fine. i'm almost at 38 fishing. started there at 31. haven't been fishing long long periods. but i am gaining. Maybe look for a pair of deep dive boots while you're at it. +5 fishing skill and they're pretty cheap.

maybe hit the tailor shop every hour or so and grab a bod. they seem to hand out a lot of footwear bods at low level. you can fill them while you fish

It's possible you somehow got bugged. Try death, then see if you can gain afterwards.

I'm on 56 now and did not have any problems with skillgains. In original UO as well as on freeshards its always like that, that you have to fish close to the coast, standing in a cosy town for example and just fish and when in the 60ies, have a try with a boat in the deep sea..with 23 in deep sea is a very good method not to gain, as was proven here.
