locking older threads

Post by Pete10 »

I found now several threads in this forum, when i searched for answers and the threads ended with questions but no one could answer anymore because a moderator had locked them.
Because he fears necrothreads.
You know, old threads where sometimes are months or even years between the answers. For some cosmetic reason they find this should not be so they lock the threads.

This behaviour has no positive side but 1 big negative: If you find an answer later, you cannot help(or find help !) anymore, because a moderator locked it(i always have to think at the illogical, irrational behaviour of leftwing extremists but i don't want to say the mod is with the ANTIFA :lool: )

I experienced it that often, that a old thread was found with google and it had the answer to what i searched, and the answers were sometimes YEARS after the question, BUT THEY WERE WRITTEN DOWN.
I could read them and no goodie two shoes took the chance to solve my problem away from me.
Believe me, if you look for an answer, you do not care a little bit, you do not even notice it, when the answers in a thread are years apart.

I don't know names, but all moderators should think about that and ask themselves: what good reason do i have to lock down old, revived threads. By god, which ?

Knowledge is king, not cosmetics, not the surface.

One of the reasons old threads are locked (not just here, but on several forums) is that the original question pertains to patches or quests that have changed so much over the years, that an answer would no longer be valid, or, the answer would be incorrect.

The team here, has changed this game a lot since I have started. Although some of the old threads are a good read, the items or process is no longer a part of the game, because of the changes throughout the years.

This means, there are old questions, where no one can give a senseful answer, but such questions do not exist. You always can say that question is done or obsolete.
But i found now several threads that were locked with a question i still would like to have an answer, so the damage is there, you have 5 threads when you google and no one has an answer because they all were locked in time because of necrophobia.

So, if the threads end in a question to which you would like to know the answer, simply start your own new thread asking that question. You would have had to make a post in an old thread anyway, to bring it back to attention, which takes the same amount of effort as a new thread. Plus a new thread is probably more likely to get an answer anyway.

Locking the threads doesn’t remove them, they’re still there for posterity. So, either: locked posts still provide information or you have to post a new thread asking a question. I really don’t see what the issue is, here.

This was a common practice for a while, since occasionally an old an irrelevant thread got bumped. We no longer lock them, since it's better for an old thead to be revived, than there to be 2 threads (or even more, if the topic is revived occasionally, just long enough for the previous thread to get locked). So if you need more info about an old locked thread, best to post a fresh one, and also include the link to the original one.

Glad to hear that. To leave threads open is - as you said too - much better because things are in one topic, instead of having 5 threads with asking the same thing and found nothing. I had happen this often in the last years generally in the internet.

A example for the killed question is here: http://www.uoex.net/forum/viewtopic.php ... 1&start=45

On page 4 Reskal asked for help and i found this thread because i had the same problem a few days ago(gave up on this now, not that important anyway). The mistake he made was, he asked and since more then a year no one wrote something in this thread, so the necrophobic hammer hit the thread. And never no more an answer possible.
Its a big thread with many infos to the mining radar, those are precious for all other people later no matter when.
Even nearly 4 years later people can still take profit from it..when its not locked.
