Make sure you have insurance set to renew (click yourself and select "renewing inventory insurance"). Otherwise it only works once. The next time, stuff stays with your corpse and after your corpse decays your stuff is gone.

When you trash an item, you get a journal message, as well as a message in your world chat color in the lower left game window saying you have trashed <whatever>. It does give a warning :D
