The Staff

As easy as we all seem to find it to lay blame on some one else (particularly on Staff), I thought I would do here as I truly try to do in real life: be honest, make a comment about something wonderful (in my opinion) or take responsibility. I am taking responsibility in this post.

About an hour ago, I added a check to [exex. Looking at the balance after I had put said gold check into an exex drop box, I was confused: it did not seem to go up. So, having never done that before, I PM'ed a couple of people to make sure my knowledge on the subject was correct. They seemed to have the same notions I did, so I began to get worried. Now, the amount of the check was 530k (Nelapsi just fell out of a chair laughing): while that may not seem like much to some, it was alot to me: especially considering it was gold that was not really mine. I was being paid for a service and I like to keep all the gold seperate so I can be as honest as possible.

I ended up sending a Help request. +C showed up and told me what I already knew: the balance as it was. He said a few other things, nothing rude, just information. He went on to say that it would take him about 1-2 hours to figure out what happened when he was already sure of what did: that I was simply wrong. Well, that puts me in defensive mode, right? Yes...right, yet wrong. I was not rude, neither was +C...but when you feel your integrity is in question, well.....it can be easy to get a bit snippy. I said one rude thing (imo) at the end of our conversation and this is what I got in return: a PM from +C explaing a bit further what he had already said and apologizing to ME if he seemed a bit short/snippy.

So, I went and really thought about it all, looked at the numbers...and guess what? Yup - I WAS WRONG. I tried to PM +C to apologize, let him know (I did reply to his PM and was not rude: it's his world!) that I figured out what I had done, but I was not able.

I WAS WRONG. +C, I am sorry I was snippy there at the end of our conversation. I feel like a big, rotten tomato for not taking more time to investigate myself and getting defensive so quickly.

Thanks to all you Staffers for all you do and all you put up with! :woot:

Sethra, rude? Never! :)

This was a very nice post of you to make, and even though I wasn't involved at all I just wanted to thank you for it. We really aren't a bunch of ogres trying to mess the players over at every opportunity, lol, and it's good to see that recognized now and again! <3

You aren't Ogres? Then why did I buy this Ogre slaying knife? It's plus nine against Ogres. Oh well. Time to find some mountain dew. It's by the fridge, right?

Its easy to get upset when staff aren't around that often (yes, there's a world outside of the box, though I fail to find it most of the time) and it's easy to blame them when things go wrong. Ogres, perhaps not... gargoyles, well.. Excelsior hasn't got that species of life emplimented (or elves, only humans) so we can't say that the staff are either of those. I've been staff on emulator's in the past, run my own game emulator and I see both sides of the coin. Yes, it's a wonderful day when someone can openly admit that they were in the wrong. I wish more of the world were like that, but then, if we were all sunshine and daisy's, there wouldn't be the person who has to say "no" to people and stick with the answer.

I'm sorry that there isn't more staff on Excelsior, but then again, finding "good" staff really isn't that easy to be honest. You have to actually trust someone with knowing that they aren't going to go power crazy or "hook their buddies up" etc. etc.

I for one appreciate this post, and vow to to everyone who reads it (and those who don't bother to read it as well) that if I am in the wrong, I will also admit it :)

Having been an admin on several servers in the past, I can say that it is extremely trying on one's patience to deal with this stuff day-in-day-out. So like the OP says, try to be understanding with the GMs. :) Being a GM on a game is like (no offense intended to anyone here) being a babysitter, a maid, a coach, and a teacher all in one. Except you don't get paid. Except in gratitude. Which is nice. :) So show some gratitude!
