runic tools are obtained by killing elementals which are spawned with certain gargoyle tools
for a runic fletching kit you want to use a gargoyle axe on a red wood or petrified tree to spawn the petrified wood elemental and then you kill it and loot the runic tool off the corpse.

But take someone with you for backup, the high level Elememtals can one shot kill most people!

Tougher than a Balron? I have zero problem with a bally so as long as they are comparable I should be fine i think.

They pop up on you and hit for 270 odd damage...

Well, this has been my experience....I will be out chopping or diggin and BAM! elemental spawns and I am dead in an instant. The elementals dont target your pets or anyone else around unless you die. For me, I would guess that about 80% of the time I die.

Just thought you should have fair warning.

when I kill petri eles I find I die a lot but I also find having an ankh near by very helpful if you have the druid spell book you can cast restorative soil to rez, but make sure it doesn't fade before you try to use it

which might mean recasting before you try to spawn an ele....I mean this is what I do I don't have ubber gear or tons of hp just a pretty bio and 2 imprisoned pets and I manage to do ok
now on to crafting, you will find without crafting gear you will not make any REALLY good yumis....sure some nice ones but nothing worth too much or too great for leveling/fighting
but good luck to you in your killings and crafting

With a all 70 resists armor, plat eles deal from 190 to 220 damage. If you max your strenght (125) and have a good royal robe (9-10 str), +7or+8 str jewels, crimson, spirit of totem and a few armor peices with hpi, you are good to go without dying. Ho and dont forget to level your weapon to 8 str and 8 hpi

If you don't feel like dying and you have alchemy in the 110's, try MAKING Runic tools. Here's how. Buy a wax crafting tool from gold stone @ Trinsic, and make Magic Medallions (Each require 50 Slumgum and 5000 gold). Once the Magic Medallion is made, double-click it and presto, a Runic Tool. One MAJOR downside, however, is that the runic tools given are absolutely random. Example, you may want a Platinum hammer and get Ethereal sewing kit instead. Magic Medallions can give either Runic Sewing Kit, Runic Fletches, Runic Tinkerer's sets, or Runic Hammers of ANY type. Great when you have LOTS of slumgum to get rid of.

Another strategy for avoiding death from the runic-bearing eles is to get 120 ninjitsu and use mirror image along with strong pets to do the killing. If you don't get hit when the ele first appears, your pets will soak up the hits as they fight, and you will live. I don't do the eles very often, but when I do, this works pretty well.

i managed to pick up some lore info on a plat ele, i would imagine the stats are similar between the plat and petri ele's. you can see why they do so much dmg from the data on the second pic (thats dmg types not resists

). its packing 355% damage.
