The Walking Dead Event

Post by +Nyx »

Returning for its 2nd year, the Walking Dead event has been updated for functionality and efficiency. This is a highly complex event structure-wise, so if you experience any odd issues while participating, please send me a page and explain it as best you can.

The event will be open until November 5th.

How it works:

Players wishing to participate in the event may enter in Britain graveyard (Trammel). Inside the square building with the red-orange doors you will see a golden stone that links to this forum post, and in front of it a sparkle. When you approach the sparkle you will be prompted to sign off on having read these rules. Once you have agreed, you will be moved into a room to receive your quest book, then moved to the entrance gate.

The quest book you receive will track the number of walkers you slay as well as the number of times you die in the event space. It stays with you for the duration of the event. You may only receive one, so do not delete it!

Once you enter the event gate, you will be moved to the event island. Your items will be removed and placed into your bank for safekeeping. You will be dressed in an event robe that equalizes the stats of everyone who joins. Brand-new players will have the same stats (and for the most part, the same skills) as the most powerful veteran. You will also be given a starter weapon that will help you along your way.

Your primary goal in the event is to survive as long as possible and to kill as many walkers as you can. There are walkers all over the island, and they are even more densely packed in the city. All around the island you may find some items here and there that will help you survive better or kill faster. There are 5 total weapon types available in the event space. There is the baseball bat, which you all begin the event with. There's also: a metal pipe, a bow, Daryl's Crossbow, and Michonne's Katana. The metal pipe and bow are the 'midrange' weapons, while the crossbow and katana are extremely good. All of the weapons are heavy, and all are temporary. They also have low durability and may break. It's also good to note that there are only a handful of arrow spawns on the island, and they are not all located with the bows. You will have to find them yourself.

The crossbow and the sword each have 2 spawn locations which don't change; however they are on much longer respawn timers than the other weapons and their areas are more heavily infested with walkers. All other weapons have 3 spawn locations each, and each will move to a different location every so often. What you find in one spot on your first visit won't necessarily be there the next time you enter the event. The crossbow will always spawn with a sizable stack of bolts.

There is no healing via spells or bandages in this event - what damage you take, you must either slowly regen, or find one of the 5 heal-potion spawns. Similarly to the weapons, the heal potion spawns will move. Each will spawn 4 heal potions. The potions last for only 45 minutes per.

There are 2 locations that will spawn a number of crates, which you may use to block walkers' paths or for other creative survival uses. The boxes only last 1 hour, and they are heavy.

We strove to make this event as "realistic" as possible within the Walking Dead theme. Thus, if at any point your character becomes too hurt, you will have been bitten and your character will die. A new walker spawns in your place, and then you will be moved to the exit. There is no delay on returning to the event after death. You may choose to immediately reenter, or to try again another time. To help expedite the entrance process, when you return to the event entrance sparkle while in possession of a questbook, you will agree to the terms and then be moved directly to the entrance gate (rather than visiting the questbook NPC again).

Rules & Important Information:

- There is a logout delay for this event. If you logout inside the event area for any reason, your character will stay active and visible for 1 hour. This means your character may be killed and removed from the event, as well as subject to our AFK rules.

- All shard rules apply to this event, particularly for AFK'ing, language, harassment, etc.

- While I have added crates for the purpose of blocking yourself into a safe area for a short period of time, there are certain circumstances in which this could be construed as exploiting. Examples: If you manage to block yourself into an area that you cannot be harmed and are AFK fighting the walkers with a ranged weapon, if you place the crates to block other players from obtaining survival items (weapons, potions, arrows, etc), or if you place the crates at locations you have determined will be guaranteed to spawn walkers for the purpose of farming them without harm to yourself. Anything along these lines will be considered exploiting and you will be banned from the event, with no participation reward, and (particularly in cases of AFK'ing) possibly jailed.

- If there are issues with the event mechanics and you do not report them, this may be considered exploiting and you may be banned from the event with no reward. Examples: Not being moved out of the event when below ~75% health, finding a survival-item spawner on a short timer and farming the items, managing to glitch onto a table/into an area the walkers cannot harm you but you can harm them, managing to take event items outside of the event area (this does not include your quest book, fret not!), and so on.

- If you delete your quest book, you will not be given another and will not be able to enter the event again, nor will you be rewarded for participating in the event. The only way to lose your book is to attempt to drop it on the ground, then select "yes" you want to delete it and click "OK". It's not hard to avoid - so no exceptions will be made and no 2nd books will be given.

- We don't mind if you work together, but obviously dual clienting or other abuses of the system and/or codex will be punished.

- Don't be a jerk. If you're behaving badly, harassing, insulting, trolling or otherwise being a poor sportsman in the event or in regards to the event, V or I will ban you from it. We see no benefit in tolerating this kind of childish behavior. If you want the continued privilege of participating in the event we worked hard to make, you will do so with the proper attitude and behavior. We aren't looking to revoke anyone's privileges, but won't hesitate to do so rather than deal with the drama.

- There is an exit on the island, where the moongate usually would be. This will allow you to leave the event area without increasing your personal death count.

- You should turn off any forms or buffs before attempting to enter the event area. We have taken steps to detect and remove things such as vampiric embrace, so if you are found inside with these sorts of things on, we will remove you.

At the end of the event, we will put out a reward station/NPC where you will turn in your books. You will be handsomely rewarded based on which overall progress bracket you fall into. Since there aren't any rewards for each kill, we plan to make the final rewards generous. The player(s) who have the most kills with the least deaths may be given a special trophy reflecting their status. However, please keep in mind that this - as with all of our events - is about the journey, not the destination. You should participate for the fun of it, rather than obsess over the reward you may receive.

New for this year:
- Walkers no longer flee, you will have to fight them right to the death
- Crossbow and katana both have a much shorter decay after picked up (2 hours, down from 6)
- Regular bows also have a 2 hour decay, down from 6
- All ranged weapons and the katana account bind as soon as you pick them up.
- All ranged weapons and the katana have had their range decreased slightly.
- Robes will decay after 6 hours, you will need to exit the event area and re-enter to be geared fresh.
- Please note that for this year, we will keep a close eye on the event as it runs. If, like last year, it appears that the walkers are far too easy to kill with far too little danger to the player then we will continue to modify it as it goes, and we may or may not modify the rewards accordingly. We are not guaranteeing that the player(s) with the highest kills vs. lowest number of deaths will receive a special reward, because we cannot be sure the event will run with the appropriate level of difficulty involved for each kill. If, at the end of the event the kill vs death numbers seems in line with what we wanted and seem pretty even across all participants (meaning with a fair spread - that the person with the top kills isn't 10x as many kills as the average participant or something equally ridiculous) then we will likely reward special trophies for the top performers.
- The issue with exit gates from last year should be fixed. However, since we're not able to test this on a large scale before opening it, take note: If you exit the event area, and then are ported back into the exit room - DO NOT EXIT AGAIN. This will remove all of your own items that were previously stored in the bank. Instead, stay where you are and send a page.

Enjoy, shardlings!

Modifications:
- Death sequence code modified slightly to prevent terror-inducing 'you've been jailed' system message
- Robes' hit point regen increased 2 to (previously 1)
- Added a message and a slightly delay for those of you re-entering immediately after exiting. This will hopefully prevent the bag issue.
- The primary walker spawner will do a full respawn every 3-6 hours to prevent any areas from becoming too empty.
- small and medium crates removed, large crate numbers increased
- This isn't a change, but a reminder - all walkers have a 60 minute decay, in case they're in an unreachable location. So, sometimes a walker you're fighting might poof.

Is there a way to have the crates on a decay timer? The crates could decay (take damage) more quickly the more walkers there are attempting to get at you. This would require more planning and be a built in afk deterrent. Yes it will make it harder if you manage to barricade yourself in an area, but isn`t the point of this that you can be over run at any moment? This event was a lot of fun last year. And once you figure out where the weapons are, thing get easier. Keep up the good work. And just for +Nyx, it wouldn`t really be that hard. Just use an xml spawner. :D joking +Nyx, joking........

The crates do decay, but there's not really a way to have them take damage based on how many mobs are around. It's something that would have to be scripted by coli, and as ever, he's on facet stuff first and foremost. It's the same reason we can't make spawn numbers dynamic based on how many people are in a region. We do the best we can with what we've got

Modifications:
- added some walker spawns to overly-safe areas
- modified how Glen moves players into the arena, he will now place the player at a random location on the first portion of the island
- bumped up the damage on the initial weapon a smidgen
- updated the detection for forms, vampiric embrace, etc.

Is the critical bite at 80% health or below or 75%? Seems like at 400 of 500 hp to me. Also your corps does not contain anything you collected when you die?

Lastly a comment, wow you have made it much more difficult this year! It is very difficult to peal a single zombie off to kill with the club at the start. More like you get mobbed and need to run for your life the whole time! Than again I think I went in I think at a zombie refresh in the middle of the day when just one other person was in there....

Modifications:
- Changed how the full respawns happen. Mobs will now respawn in 2 groups, and each group respawns every 6 hours or so. They will not necessarily respawn both groups at the same time, group 1 might respawn and a few minutes later group 2 might respawn.
- slightly decreased overall number of mobs on the island (roughly 200 less total).

just out of curiosity, what is the total number? Magnite, Ren and I had a fun time running for our lives, but we did well.

Rewards are now available. Go into the walking dead entrance building, and say 'reward' to Jake the NPC.

NOTE: you cannot continue to play in the event after you've received the reward so ONLY say 'reward' to Jake when you are sure you are done with the event.

SECOND NOTE: If you mob on the reward NPCs and/or move around while they are processing you, your reward might not display the proper data. I can fix this manually if you page, but please try not to mess it up so I don't have to hehe.

The rewards area will be open until November 16th.
