Crops upgrade

Post by +Colibri »

We have a refreshed and balanced crop system. On a related note, there will be numerous new crops available Elysium, but while me and +Arden are working on this, and since we had to upgrade the crop system anyway, I also refreshed the existing ones to make it a bit more fun.

Notable changes:
- Crops have an overall lifetime yield amount. After a plant is farmed out, you have to plant a new seed.
- Planted in a farmland, sower has exclusive use for 48 hours after last visit/harvest. After that, they can be harvested from, or uprooted by anyone. Planted in a house (yard tile), crops can only be used by the house owner. The crops that exist currently will have their safety extended for 7 days.
- The crops differ by their growth time, required skill to grow, and well there are a lot of possible parameters but not all of them are used in these regular crops.
- Vegetable growing intended for newbies and lower-intermediary players (e.g. as addition to escorting nobles, something new to do).

Vegetables:
- Lettuce: very fast, low (cooking) skill. Intended to be least profitable, as an introduction to the system. New players start with 6 lettuce seeds, as an invitation to growing.
- Carrot: bit slower, more profitable.
- Onion & garlic: slower than the above (40-60 minutes grow time) but with even more profit per plant. (if you prefer waiting instead of clicking). Garlic yields stocks of garlic, which can be cut into the garlic ingredient.

- Wheat & corn are currently not working (seeds cannot be obtained from the farmer, and cannot be planted). But they will be a bit different than the above, more like flax & cotton.

- Flax: starts yielding very fast in just 10 minutes, yields more flax than cotton plant but on a slower delay. A flax bundle yields 1 spool of thread.
- Cotton: more expensive seeds, initially grows almost a day before it stars yielding, then yields faster than flax. But a bale of cotton gives 2 spools of thread.

Please note that there's still a few kinks in the math and the code, so I will likely restart again on Friday with a few adjustments (and possible bug fixes). If you come into an issue, you can mention it in a reply.
(e.g. stock of garlic doesn't have a proper name, hehe).

Overall, it shouldn't be as profitable as flax was for a while - that was just a complete misconfiguration. But it should be something a little fun that produces sane amounts of gold for someone in the first few weeks - or even beyond that, for those who will find it interesting.

Things to look forward to:
- I will add intelligence stat into planting, crops that have a big number of yield (corn/wheat/flax/cotton) will have more lifetime yield if planted by an intelligent sower.
- Watering bonus (likely faster grow time for some crops, likely the vegetables only).
- Other three growable reagents (nightshade, ginseng, mandrake root) to be available in seed form for planting, as well as spawning in the world and can be picked by anyone.
- Spinning wheel and loom to have an auto-reload aka multispin - so that a player without macros will be able to doubleclick&target and end up with let's say a dozen spools of thread per action (with a bigger delay), instead of clicking like crazy.

Thx for the headsup Wil.

Also, note to self - old crops still have unlimited lifetime yield :)

The 48 hour window is a bit troubling. Those that regularly take 3 day trips (work related or other) are vulnerable to losing any good farming plots they may acquire.

I tend to agree with this. It will not affect me either way, but I think 3 day weekends should be considered.
Maybe 96 hours instead?
That way people can't plant crops and just never attend them for various reasons. But it gives people with real lives time to attend real life without sacrificing game life.

Well, the public farms are meant mainly for younger players. Those of you older players have homes which can accommodate plantable soil tiles, so your crops are safe for however long you're away. Expecting players to return to their crops within 48 hours in a public farm is pretty reasonable. Particularly since it's not as if they're paying for the space. Anyone who loses their crop would be out a few gp for the seed(s), and that's it.

Yeah since the plant are very short-lived (compared to how it used to be), and since house has permanent safety, the field safety duration is intended to be something a bit longer than 24 hours (hence 48). I might increase this duration if the fields turn out to be very empty - this is mainly so that there is space for those who can't yet afford farm tiles in the house.

Glad it was longer than 24 hours. My legacy flax plants haven't regrown. It's been over 27 hours since their post server restart harvest. Does that sound correct? Not sure if these are the skills that still impact regrowth, I'm 120 tailoring and 120 cooking.

There has never been a spot for flax on the tailor keys. Flax used to go onto the keys as wool. 1 flax goes on keys as 1 wool which spins into 3 yarn when looms into 1 bolt. Hence all the legacy flax fields. 1 flax gave 1 bolt of cloth.

That's an intentional change, I believe, to prevent folks exploiting around the lower yield.
